Article - A guide to feeling happy!
How to Look Like You

Last week I had one of those awful days – I hadn’t slept a wink, my eyes looked like they had been dragged through a bush backwards and I had a mood that would’ve made the devil look like better company.

Did I bounce out of bed like something in a vitamin advert and say “Okay world, what delights do you have in store today?” Did I hell.

However, I did pick up the phone and call a very good friend. One who listened and reminded me that no, the world was not over; it was just my perspective that was out of focus.  I decided to take the day one hour at a time and gently coax myself that this awful mood would pass.

What had happened to create such a low mood? Well, I won’t bore you with that, but what I will tell you is how I made myself feel better.

My sister tells me that every time she has a low mood, she forces herself to think of three things she is grateful for. So, with that in mind, I have devised a ‘Pick-up Plan’.

Here are ten things you can try in an emotional emergency. Who knows, they might make you feel like yourself again.

1..       Don’t compare yourself with others – it’s a waste of time. Compare yourself with YOU.  Have you made any improvements in the last year? Good for you! Note them down and give yourself a pat on the back.
2.       Write a journal and keep it positive.  What am I grateful for today? What did I enjoy about today?
3.       Accept compliments gracefully (a simple ‘thank you’, not ‘this old thing?!’) and write them down.
4.       Sleep well.  A decent night’s sleep will do wonders for your mood. In fact, getting the zzzz’s in will make you feel like you can climb mountains. Take to your bed super early and listen to some lovely chilled music. Pretty soon, you’ll be in the Land of Nod.
5.       Write down what you’re proud of. Whatever it is, scribble it down!
6.       Overcome perfection. Who says you have to be perfect? You! Put the big stick away and know that life doesn’t have to be a super massive contest. Not at all.
7.       Meditate.  Sounds a bit airy fairy I know, but taking just 15 minutes out of your day to sit down and do nothing does help to relax the mind.
8.       Acceptance. So that situation might not be working out 100% as you would like it. Remember that you can’t control other people/situations, so you may as well save yourself the head stress and turn off the worry switch.
9.       Make treats a part of your daily habit.  A nice hot bath, an hour in your favourite coffee shop reading, cooking a nice meal… whatever floats your boat, treat yourself!
10.   Focus on the positive. Yes, I’m reiterating a previous point but it’s really that important. What is going well in your life? What do you like about your job? Focus on the good stuff!
