Saturday Snapshot 3/9

Hosted by Alyce at At Home with Books

I am cheating this week and have several photos from our recent family day out.

Monday was our last Bank Holiday of the year, here in the UK. It was also my dad's birthday.

We had a lovely day out doing the things we love.

AJ was very excited and I am sure it was the perfect day for him as we got to ride on a steam train and go to the seaside.

Black Prince Steam train, changing ends at Sheringham Station

We drove to the train station at Holt.  This is the Poppy Line -North Norfolk Railway.
It runs steam and diesel trains, from yesteryear, along the track to Sheringham.
The line originally opened in 1887 and closed in 1964. It was restored in 1989.
Holt station was moved from it's original location to where it is now, brick by brick in 2002! Amazing!

Along the way we could see the sea from the train window and I sat imagining how excited holidaymakers in the Victorian times would have felt seeing the sea for the first time, or going on their first annual holiday beside the sea.  You can see a windmill and local church in these photos.  Also right at the back, at sea you can see the modern Wind Turbines and a tanker.

Dirty spots on the window at the bottom of photo!
The white poles in the sea are actually wind turbines, and can you see the tanker?

Sheringham was changed from a fishing village to a seaside resort with the opening of this railway.  A hotel was built there in 1889 costing £10,000. Others followed.

Today Sheringham is still a small seaside town compared to some of our East Coast resorts.

Of course, once we arrived at Sheringham we had to have the traditional Fish & Chips followed by Whippy Icecream.    Fish & Chips always tastes better by the sea.
